The Best Ways To Wear Black Eyeliner

I’ll go ahead and get this beauty confession out right away; I don’t like eyeshadow. There, I’ve said it. Now I know nearly every woman loves eyeshadow, but it just doesn’t work for me. I feel as though it is heavy, weighs my lids down and detracts from my eyes.

My eyeshadow aversion could also stem from my experience every time I go near a makeup counter. Inevitably every makeup artist sees my green eyes, gets excited and immediately wants to put purple shadow or liner on me. Why? Black looks so good but every single one insists on purple or as a back up blue. No, just no.

I prefer simple minimalist styles in my wardrobe and in my makeup. Black eyeliner makes my eyes POP. Whether I keep the eyeliner skinny along my lash line, channel a 60s cat-eye or go for a rock-star liner that extends around the entire lid, I know my eyes will be the focus.

Over time I’ve found the best ways to wear black eyeliner and a few of my favorite celebrity fashion stars rock my three preferred eyeliner styles:

Lauren Conrad’s simple use of black eyeliner has always made her one of my favorite style stars {along with her love for Chanel bags and shoes}. She shares a similar aversion to eyeshadow and uses black eyeliner to highlight her green eyes, while keeping the rest of her makeup natural with a light pink lip and softly highlighted cheeks. This look is appropriate for any daytime activity from shopping to brunch or off to work.

Alexa Chung nails the 60s cat eyeliner look to perfection. As with LC, Alexa keeps the rest of her makeup simple allowing the bold black eyeliner to be the main focus of her makeup and this brings all the attention to her light eyes. This look can still pass for daytime activities with a retro vibe thrown in.

Kate Moss is the queen of rock-star chic; she can make any look or style work and her use of black eyeliner is pure rock-star sexy. She rims the entire eyelid in black kohl creating a look that brings all focus to her hazel eyes. As with LC and Alexa, the rest of the makeup is kept light with natural foundation, blush colored cheeks and pale pink lips. This look is best for late night dinner, drinks or just when you want that extra doe-eyed feel to your look.

What do you think? Do you share my aversion to eyeshadow or my love for black eyeliner? I’d love to hear from you!

You’ve inspired me to give black eyeliner a try! What’s your favorite product to use?

I’m so happy to hear that! I hope you like it!

I really like the Marc Jacobs Gel Crayon; it’s soft so in won’t tug or feel hard against the delicate skin around the eye, it goes on smoothly and has a creamy feel to it, plus it lasts for hours on end.
